For students to be successful it is important that they have a safe, friendly and attractive environment in which to pursue their studies.

Burnside High School has a very attractive, large campus of 16.2 hectares (40 acres) with trees, gardens, courtyards and expansive sports fields. The school has two gymnasiums, an athletics track, an outdoor swimming pool for summer use, and a new library and administration complex. The 700 seat Aurora Center for the Performing Arts is not only used by the school but extensively by the Christchurch community for Music and Drama performances or meetings.

Burnside High School buildings are functional, modern and well maintained with specialist rooms for most subjects. The school is constantly upgrading the grounds and facilities. Every classroom has a data projector for teaching and learning. Students at the school are encouraged to keep their enviroment tidy and be respectful of the grounds and classrooms.

The academic achievements of students at Burnside High School are the envy of other schools and students throughout New Zealand. Each year Burnside High School is among the leading schools in examination results. We are particularly well known for our outstanding Music Programme as well as Visual Arts, Mathematics and Computing.
 
For these reasons Burnside High School attracts many students who are academically very able. The school has a focus on achievement and success in academic programmes and encourages students to strive for personal  excellence.
 
One of the many advantages of being a large school is that we are able to offer a wide range of subject options. Students can try different subjects as options in the junior school and find out what they are good at and interested in, something that is very important to do at Secondary School level.
 
Our innovative subject programmes lead, progressively, to senior levels where students are prepared for entry to university. At the same time we also cater for students with talents in other areas. We encourage all students to discover their talents, and to develop them to their full potential.
