ACHIEVEMENTS and SUCCESSES

Term 3 was another very positive term with many students achieving highly in a wide range of activities. Our congratulations go to them all.

PAD NATIONAL GERMAN SCHOLARSHIP.

Lauren van Noorden 11KR has been awarded a national scholarship that will enable her to travel to Germany in July 2010. Our congratulations go to Lauren who won this scholarship over many Year 12 students from through out New Zealand.

PASCH PARTNER SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP to GERMANY

Emily Birkinshaw 12WN, William Frost 12TO and Kathryn Mason 12HI have been awarded scholarship to travel to Germany and study there in January 2010. Our congratulations and best wishes for their travel go to each of them.

CPIT YEAR 11 CHEMISTRY COMPETITION

Congratulations to Team 1 of Jack McAuley, Alex O'Keefe and Tommy Peng who were placed Second out of 23 teams in this competition at the end of term and also to Team 2 of Ji Woo Choi, Jason Guey and Issei Yuki who were placed Fourth in the same competition. Well done to both teams.

REGIONAL FRENCH SPEAKING COMPETITION

Congratulations to our students who gained excellent places in the Regional French Speaking Competition which resulted in Burnside High School winning the Des Walker Schools'  Cup.

Notable achievements were:

Year 11: Claudiu Mic 11RE - Second, Adam Clearwater 11KR - Third, William Munn 11JM - Merit

Year 12:  Amy Okamura-Kho 12BK - First, Naomi Deacon 12GD - Merit

Year 13: Sam Frost 13BW - Second

UNIVERSITY OF CANTERBURY SCHOLARS IN SCIENCE

Congratulations to the following students who are finalists in this prestigious science competition. They will now compete with 50 other finalists for the two $5,000 scholarships. Our congratulations and best wishes for the final in November go to each of them.

The students are: Samuel Chia, Kevin Jan, Hannah Janssens, Michelle Lambert, Nancy Wang and Quan Yang.

NATIONAL BIG SING FINALE

Congratulations to Bel Canto, and their Director Ms S Densem, who were awarded one of only two Gold Medals at the National Big Sing Finale in Dunedin.

NATIONAL CHAMBER MUSIC COMPETITION

Congratulations go to the Waldchen Trio for winning the National Final of the Secondary School Chamber Music Competition in the Christchurch Town Hall on 1 August. 

The  Trio was William Frost on flute, Anita Huang on harp and Kate Oswin on viola and they played Veiled Echoes by Israeli composer Lior Navok. 

Congratulations also go to Ms Renaud, their director, who found the wonderful piece of music for them and helped them perform it to this winning level.  A magnificent achievement everyone!

CANTAMATHS COMPETITION

Congratulations to the Year 9 team placed first in the Canterbury Cantamaths competition in the Town Hall on Thursday 13 August.

Congratulations also to the two Year 10 teams placed first and third in the Cantamaths competition. This was a spectacular result for Burnside High School!

Jazz Music - Congratulations to the Burnside High School Big Band, directed by Mr Bainbridge and The SMP Jazz Quartet, directed by Michael Bell, for winning two of the three gold medals awarded at the Jazz Quest competitions on Saturday 25 July. Well done everyone!

Congratulations also to the Jazz Quartet for taking out many of the awards at the Southern Jam Jazz Festival in Blenheim in the weekend of 8 and 9 August. Best Small Band, Best Combo, Best Trumpeter, Best Guitarist and Best Musician Overall, are all awards that the group and the individuals involved won. Well done!

The Wizard of OZ - Congratulations go to all involved with this great show that was enjoyed by all!  Wonderful costumes, simple but effective set that enabled the show to flow along, great lighting and sound effects, great music and an enthusiastic cast that gave it all and of course, TOTO! Who could ask for more?
