| Foundation day pupil |
Mary Maddren(nee Travers) |
My contact with the school started from the very first morning the school was opened in 1960. I was the first pupil at the school, arriving at 3.30am that first morning. My Aunt and I sat at the end of A Block(the only block built!), playing cards by torchlight and as the sun came up we watched the rabbits running about on the grass out by the cabbage trees. The next pupil, Brian Hitchon arrived at 5am and we went on to be the first Head Prefects of the school, holding this office for two years. My connection did not finish there. From school, I went on to Canterbury University and Christchurch Teachers College, married at the start of 1969 and took up my first teaching position that same year, back at Burnside,as a fulltime English teacher. I only taught for one year, before the first of our four children arrived. Our children are now scattered around the world, while my husband and I reside in Brisbane, Australia. We both still have elderly relatives living in Christchurch so we often travel back to Christchurch for fleeting visits. At these times we try to attend concerts or performances being given by your students. I have always been proud of my connection with Burnside and with a family interest in Performing Arts, have followed very closely the successes of Burnside students and the establishment and success of the Aurora Centre. |
| Foundation day pupil | Peter Mutton jennipeter@optusnet.com.au | Another of the 300 odd pupils of that 1st.day in 1960.Memories flood back on reading this site, the Bridal Path Trek and Mr Strange(maths) with his squaw on the hipponeuse = the squaws on the other two hides. Left Christchurch 1969 to live and work in Fiji,PNG now in Brisbane. |
| Foundation day pupil | Don Smith jennydon@netaccess.co.nz |
I am a foundation day pupil who joined the few under the cabbage trees on that first day in 1960. Gosh, it must be getting close to another reunion time, surely? Less than eight years to wait! After reading some of the other names on the list and learning of the interesting lives they have led, it kind of makes mine sound boring.. worked, married, two boys.. now both grown up with lives of their own.. married again, travelled a bit and now living the quiet life in Christchurch. I too, would like to catch up with some of the kids that shared those carefree days from '60 to '64 |
| Foundation day pupil | Basil Winterbourn basil.winterbourn@otraco.com | I am resident in Perth, Australia but visit New Zealand regularly. I am interested in learning of other Foundation Day pupils |
| Foundation day pupil | Dr Janice Priest (nee Stinear) janice@healthyoptions.co.nz | Burnside High School remains entrenched in my consciousness as the trophy of my young adult education. I learned to rock and roll, ride double on bikes, art inspiration, wear thick stockings and gloshes in winter, maths challenges, marching and boy friends. Unfortunately I became the first pupil to be transferred in the later part of the 4th Form, due to parents role as Coca Cola manufacturers. I went onto to graduate as a Nurse in Wellington, married, widowed, etc, 4 children.Trained as a Naturopathic Doctor, an Honorary Doctorate, author, established an international publishing company called Healthy Options Ltd ( 24years ) producing wellness magazines etc. Also an educational company and a Charitable Trust for community wellness projects. Women in Business Award and regulatory health consultant etc..Tauranga based since 1970. Still rock and roll. www.janicepriest.com |

I have been in the UK for just on 12 years working as a CAD drafts person on a number of high profile prejects in the UK. Most notably has been the high speed rail link from the Channel Tunnel to London & more recently on the Olympic Park Project for the 2012 Oympic Games in London. During my time here I have remarried & moved several times. Now living in a country area just out of Canterbury in Kent. So my association with Canterbury in another part of the world is destined to live on. I have been fortunate to have been in contact with some former school friends & recently met one of them who is over here on extended leave from her teaching career. It would be good to catch up with more of my old school friends either through this connection or Freinds Reunited, etc. Maybe later on at the 50th Anniversary of the school. Now that would be a feature event of our lifetime. |

| 1970 - 74 | Murray Hawkes hawkes.mclennan@xtra.co.nz | I had a ball at Burnside, worked for a couple of years then coasted for a few more, seemed to keep busy but didn't seem to do much. As with most of the students over the years I watched the place expand and acquire progressively better facilities. I think that we had the best crack at enjoying school of all the generations, long hair (put a rubber band around it and stuff it doown the back of your collar) and scruff was in, bits of flower power and some really short kilts, T Rex and Pink Floyd. I continued the slide at Canterbury University before finally discovering rocks, geology lead me to a career in Oil exploration, Oz, SE Asia, China, Burma, Thailand, and currently he Middle East. My wife Jeanette and I semi-retired in 92 returned to Canterbury on a farm behind Methven, currently raising two wonderful children, and working harder than ever to keep farm and family thriving. Always welcome visitors or contacts from the past. I have not done much of a job maintaining Chch contacts and so would welcome anyone dropping a line to hawkes.mclennan@xtra.co.nz |

Would love to be contacted from anyone that remembers me. |
| 1970 - 73 | Vicki Thomson tvwhite@gil.com.au |
Having lived in Brisbane, Australia since 1981, I remember BHS with such great memories:- the first few weeks terrified of being lost in such a huge school. This was before the days of NSEW divisions!! I am married to a wonderful man, Tim White, whom was a fellow student at the time I attended. We actually met after we had left school, married in 1981 & intended to travel Australia for two years. We have lived in Brisbane ever since & have two sensational teenagers. I have 3 older brothers & a younger sister, so the family has attended this great school from foundation year to early 80's. |

I admired Mr Hunter, our Principal, who knew the names of every student! I played squash for the school, and endeavoured to play the piano for the orchestra! History and Geography were my best subjects and I have a BA from Canterbury University. Now I have two sons and a daughter; the boys (Andrew and Ross) have attended Burnside and even had two of the same teachers I had – Mr Guerin and Mr Clay! A product of 3N5. I realised what a great school Burnside was when I finished my 7th form year at a school in Auckland. I completed a BSc (Biochemistry & Pharmacology) thanks to my science platform established with Mr. Petrie and Mr. Bell and also a BCom (Marketing) at Auckland University. I have held a number of positions in the Healthcare industry (pharmaceutical and medical devices) and currently I am a Senior Product Manager at Fisher & Paykel Healthcare in Auckland. The job is awesome and takes me all over the world, which makes it hard for my wife (yes an Aucklander, but a nice one!) and two girls (23 months and 5 months). I'm the youngest of 4, all of whom went to Burnside. Karen Ivory( teacher currently in Japan), Jocelyn (Joss) Ivory Head girl in 1976/77 (Technical environment Advisor, currently in Paris France) and David Ivory (Architect & entrepreneur currently in Hong Kong) |

Robyn Pett (now Twemlow) twemlows@clear.net.nz |
I was in South Division, 3S3 from memory. Mr Fletcher was our divisional principal and I remember him driving us in his old Landrover to water polo matches when we couldn't get minivans. My year in 4S3 is a bit of a blur but I think we had Mr Phillips for English 5S2 is also a bit vague - I was juggled in to a classroom that would fit my refusal to do science in the 5th form - I think I was the only kid that didn't do it. I think we had Mr Lees for English. I left in my 6th form year thinking it would be fun to work in advertising with Saatchi & Saatchi. It turned out working was harder than school so I came back in 1989 to get UE. It was a fantastic year and I did all the subjects I enjoyed like drama with Mr Skerten and Mr Smith; Journalism with Mr Duff, Art History with Ms Orme and English with Mrs Thwaites. Off I went to Canterbury University, got a BA and a Diploma in Journalism, lived in Auckland for a year, tripped around the world for a bit, then came home. At the moment I'm working as a journalist part time for The Press and its community paper The Mail from home, while also juggling looking after my 22-month old daughter and my husband! Burnside High School is a great school and in a few more years we are going to sacrifice living in the fabulous Heathcote Valley to move in to zone so that our daughter can go to Burnside too. |

I attended Burnside from 1995 to 1999 after moving to Christchurch from Auckland. After high school I studied for two years at Natcoll Design College, graduating with a Diploma in Graphic Design and a Diploma in Multimedia. From there I worked for 1 year as a Multimedia eveloper at a company called MediaFX, making interactive CD-roms and doing graphic design. Now I am currently working as Junior Art director at UMC Advertising, creating all types of advertising media like TV commercials, billboards, etc. All of this would not have happened without the guidance of my design teacher, Mr Gardiner. It would be great to catch up with anyone that did design in 7th form to see what they are up to, have a cup of joe or woteva. |

I'm now in the hell-like, boys-only Melbourne High School. I miss BHS and regrets that I was not able to take up the position as a prefect in West Division. The bloody Aussies are makeing fun of my accent but I know it's their accent that's truely funny. Anyway. |

Burnside, the place to have fun while study! I had a lot of fun when I was in the west division. Thanks Burnside as I met some of my lifelong friends who I still contact frequently with. Thanks for all the brilliant teachers who bear patiently with our naughtiness and those who teach us with love especially Mr Weusten, Mr Warren, Mr Boyd, Mrs Mattingley. The beef pies from the canteen are nice, and the library is a great place to hang out, especially winter. It was great to have met you guys... vic, jeng, pang, simon... If I have a 2nd life, I would surely choose Burnside again! |

| 1999 - 2002 | Ngawara Highet ngawara@ntlworld.com | I recently left Burnside to come over and follow my musical aspirations in the UK. My teachers there were Brilliant! I performed in assembly singing country songs, was known for my teletubbies, and tried my best in the 'fluffy bunnies' Easter egg 'stuffing -as -many-Easter-eggs-into-mouth-as-poss.'s competition!! haha=good times Burnside was an amazing school and I left with extremely fond memories. I would love to hear from any of my mates still at Burnside and also any who have left... |

I had a great time at Burnside High and would really wish to come back to New Zealand one day.I really enjoyed myself over there. By now, I've been in the German army for exactly five years - training hard to become an artillery officer. I've got seven years of time left at the army before I can do something else - like moving to New Zealand or so. Last year I married a long known friend. |

"I am now living in Brisbane, Australia, going to a school where the pupil simply throw their rubbish on the ground after finishing their food, and every now and then a guy and a girl are caught in the toilets together. I really don't see the point WHY my parents sent me to this school, or why they sent me to Brisbane in the first place! My two short years at Burnside were probably the most valuable memories I have: I will always remember them. Burnside rocks!" |

Greetings! This is Jeffrey Davidson and I just thought I'd be the first of the leavers '04' from Burnside High School to write in this section. Started from the year 2000 as a year 9 (3rd Form) student, finished year 13 (7th Form) in the end of 2004. 5 years go so fast. I was there during the creations of the I Block area and development of the wicked Aurora Centre. I am currently in Gold Coast, Australia trying to get through Uni, doing Digital Design (Thanks heaps to Mr Gardiner). Can't wait until the reunion. If any leavers '04' wishes to contact me, email at lil_j_meister@hotmail.com or jeffreydavidson23@hotmail.com. Go the people of BHS!!! |
