Sport at Burnside High School

Individual and team sport success by Burnside High School pupils covers the full spectrum of sporting pursuits available, with students competing with distinction at local, national and international levels.

Recent notable successes include:

Netball: Our A team placed 4th in the SuperNet Competition for the 2008 season.

Rugby: The 1st XV qualify to play in the prestigious Press Cup competition.

Softball: Our girls’ team winners of the 2006 and 2008 South Island Championships.

Athletics: Winners of the trophy for the top co-educational school in the region.

Badminton: The boy’s team won the local A grade competition for the 18th consecutive year.

Soccer: The girls’ and boys’ 1st XI teams continue to rank amongst the top teams nationally. The boys’ team winners of the local knockout competition in 2005 and 2008.

Cricket: The boys’ and girls’ teams compete in the respective South Island Championships, both competing well against single sex schools with cricket rich histories. In 2008 the Girls' Eleven qualified as South Island finalists for the National Finals in Rotorua and finished third in NZ.


National Representation
: A significant number of Burnside High School students have achieved national selection in their sports, with Annabelle Carey competing in swimming at the Athens Olympics and at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games, while Jenny Hung competed in table tennis at the Commonwealth Games.
