Burnside swim team brings home the medals!

Our Burnside swimming team excelled at the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Swimming Competition – bringing home 23 national medals!

Congratulations to our nine-strong swim team who competed in Auckland at the beginning of August.

The competition kicked off with a thrilling relay race where Burnside led from the outset and came home strong to hold off Wellington Boys’ High School and to tie for the gold medal in the Mens 4 x 50m Medley Relay. Congratulations to Zachary Horton, Soeren Wells, Alex Gibson and Connor Jenkins who then collectively went on to claim silver in the Mens 4 x 50m Freestyle Relay.

Not to be out done, the team produced more relay magic with Lara Streletsky, Connor Jenkins, YouYou Tang and Zachary Horton taking silver in the Mixed 4 x 50m Medley Relay.

Connor Jenkins, a member of the New Zealand Youth swimming team to compete in both Australia and Fiji this year and a breaststroke specialist, produced another three outstanding swims to claim gold in the U16 Mens 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke.

The sensation of the tournament must have been Zachary Horton who individually claimed eleven podium finishes! Competing individually in the U14 Men Zach took: gold in the 100m individual medley, 100m freestyle and 200m freestyle; silver in the 50m and 100m butterfly, 50m freestyle and 200m individual medley and to round out his collection, bronze in the 50m breaststroke.

To put this into context, a number of these swims exceeded times that we saw from swimmers at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games which were on at the same time. Congratulations to Zach, Connor and Soeren on their recent selection as part of the NZ National Youth Programme National Age Group Squad. They will join the squad in October for their first training camp which is a pathway to Olympic representation.

These individuals and the team as a whole are destined to continue to perform well on the national and international stage. Watch this space!
