Our Girls and Boys First XI’s have been in action in the last two weeks with exceptional results.

First up, our girls put on an outstanding all-round performance — with tight, disciplined bowling to restrict Villa Maria to just 79. They they backed that up with confident, aggressive batting to chase the total down comfortably reaching 80/1 with 20 balls remaining.

This was an excellent start to the season and a great team effort in both batting and fielding. A Burnside win by nine wickets!

Bowling highlights:
Divija Gopalakrishnan: 2 overs, 2/0
Chelsea Gallagher: 2 overs, 2/6
Violet Creighton: 1/6, taking the only wicket
Eshika Renjith Nair: A brilliant catch

Batting highlights:
Claudia Van Grunsven: 37 off 30 balls (top scorer in the game)
Divija Gopalakrishnan: 16 off 30 balls

They’ve since backed that up with another fine performance against Christchurch Girls’ High School Red yesterday. Chasing 54 for victory, they easily met their target in the twelve over, securing a convincing 8-wicket win.

Boys First XI: Prelim NZ Cup T20 tournament

Burnside participated in this extended tournament last week; which now involves schools from across Canterbury. The winner progresses to the main draw which was a great incentive for our team and we went into the tournament with high hopes. We were not disappointed!

Our tournament started strong with wins against Ellesmere, Darfield, Rolleston College and Lincoln High School. That took as to the final against Cashmere High School.

Chasing 197 for the win, step up:

Olly Upjohn (34)

Olly Fifield (41), off 9 balls including five sixes in a row!

Muhammad Haroon, unbeaten 53 off 23 balls.

Tournament winners!

The three days of competition was intense but our team were measured in their approach, evaluated the risk and delivered exceptional performances, whilst upholding our school values superbly.

Next up is Christchurch Boys’ High School in the main draw, with a date yet to be set. Watch this space.

Thank you to all the parents, staff and supporters for enabling these opportunities and to photographer John Davidson for catching all the boys’ action whilst supporting his son.
