Deputy head of school, Ryan Yoon, broke his own Guinness World Record for the fastest man to run a half marathon while wearing a beekeeper’s suit at the recent Christchurch half marathon.
Ryan eclipsed his own world record by more than 20 minutes finishing the Christchurch half marathon in 1hr 36min 24sec.
Ryan broke the world record marathon in a beekeeping suit in December in Xiamen, China, in a time of 1hr 57min 35sec.
The inspiration behind wearing the suit was to promote Ryan’s partnership with HiveEnergy and its natural sports gel. When they generously offered to support Ryan in his races in China, he got this brilliant idea – why not create some buzz and raise awareness by running in a bee suit? And just like that, a fun and quirky idea was born!
HiveEnergy is an Otago owned and operated honey processing business based in Mosgiel, dedicated to providing consumers with a convenient and natural energy source.
Ryan is a sales executive for HiveEnergy and operates a Christchurch running club, Hive Runners, sponsored by the brand. HiveEnergy also sponsored Ryan’s races in China, where he ran four half marathons in 35 days.
The suit weighs between 2-3kg and Ryan has been conditioning himself ahead of the Christchurch race by training in the suit for three hours a week.
Ryan is our deputy head boy and has been on the student council here for five years.
