Learning abroad
We regularly have a number of opportunities for students to tour different countries. International tours offer valuable learning opportunities beyond the traditional classroom setting. They give students the opportunity to immerse themselves in different cultures, languages and environments. This exposure broadens their worldview and invites an enhanced understanding of cultural diversity.
Students are able to gain firsthand knowledge about the history, traditions and way of life in other countries. It can challenge them to step outside their comfort zones, as they are required to make decisions, manage time and navigate environments. This fosters independence, problem solving skills and the ability to adapt to unexpected situations.
The experiences gained during such tours can leave a lasting impact on their personal and academic lives.

Cultural exchanges
International travel options at Burnside High School vary each year. We have an exchange with our sister school in Fukuoka, Japan which sees students attend one year from Burnside High School and then next we host Japanese students.
In 2026 trips to China, Australia and Japan will take place and European Tours are approved for 2027.
We are also fortunate to partner with a number of organisations who offer cultural immersion programmes. One such experience is with the Goethe Institute who offer a student from Burnside High School, each year, the opportunity to study for three weeks in Germany, and another, a three-day immersion course in Wellington.
