Congratulations to Oliver Henwood who recently represented New Zealand in the U19 Korfball Team.
Korfball is a ball sport, with similarities to Netball and Basketball. The objective is to throw a ball into a netless basket that is mounted on a 3.5m pole. Each team consists of four female and four male players.
Korfball sees two teams on opposing halves. Each half must have two male and two female players from each team. There is an attacking half and a defending half for each team. Players can not swap between halves unless two goals have been scored.
Originating in the Netherlands at the turn of the century, this Dutch mixed gender sport that has recently started to explode in Canterbury.
Recently Oliver traveled with the New Zealand U19 Korfball team to the 40th Taiwan National Championship in Hsinchu, Taiwan.
The New Zealand team came third, a massive achievement, as it was the first time in 19 years a national age group team has brought home a trophy in the sport. The competition was intense with some of the best age-grade players in the world in attendance.
Oliver also attended the Senior South Island Secondary School Korfball tournament, as a player and a coach, where his team placed fourth.
