Burnside athletes had an outstanding week at the national Maadi Cup rowing regatta in Twizel, where our squad made six A finals, seven B finals and two C finals.
Our boys U15 Double Sean Gillman and Ben Smith led our performances and now have a silver madal around their necks. This is a huge achievement and the first Maadi medal for Burnside males in over two decades!
Full rowing results can be accessed via the rowit.nz website.
In addition to Ben and Sean, we had five further A race finalists who did exceptionally well to be placed in the top eight in the country. Rowing is extremely competitive and each of these teams will have competed in heats, quarter finals and semi’s before taking their place amongst the elite athletes. Congratulations to:

We are also delighted to share that Thomas Carey and Melissa Irvine have been invited to trial for the U18 South Island squad to take on the North Island in the upcoming national regatta. This is the first time ever that members from the Burnside High School Squad have been selected to trial and we wish them all the best.
A huge congratulations to these students, the whole crew of 27 who rowed at Maadi Cup and their support teams. The grit, perseverance and resilience demonstrated by these young people was amazing to witness and they all represented Burnside with pride.
