Examination Dates
Burnside High School Senior School Derived Grade Examinations will take place from Tuesday 8 September until Thursday 17 September. This is a significant assessment period for all senior learners.
Purpose of the Derived Grade Examinations
These examinations are an important part of our senior assessment programme.
They provide:

A formal opportunity for learners to demonstrate achievement under examination conditions

A reliable indication of current progress toward NCEA standards

Evidence that may be used to support derived grades if a learner is unable to sit external examinations in November

Valuable feedback to guide final preparation for end-of-year achievement

All students are expected to approach these examinations with seriousness and full preparation.
Attendance and Study Expectations
During the examination period:

Students are required to attend school only when they have an examination scheduled

Normal timetabled classes will not run for senior students during this period

When not sitting examinations, students are expected to complete independent study either at home or in supervised study spaces if available

Examination attendance is compulsory

Students are encouraged to treat each examination day as a structured school day aligned with their scheduled assessment times

Students must attend their exam in full school uniform
Examination Timetable
Final examination timetables will be published prior to the examination period. Students will be informed through normal school channels.
Students are expected to:

Ensure they are fully prepared with required equipmen
Supporting Your Young Person
Families play an important role in helping students prepare effectively. We encourage you to support your young person by:

Creating a quiet, distraction-free study space at home

Encouraging early preparation rather than last-minute revision
-
Supporting a balanced routine including sleep, nutrition and hydration

Checking they can access study notes, resources, and past assessment material

Encouraging reduced work hours during the examination period where possible
Study and Wellbeing Advice
Students will be supported in school leading up to examinations with guidance on revision strategies, study planning and exam preparation skills.
We encourage students to also make use of NZQA-approved study resources and revision strategies.
Final Note
The Derived Grade Examination period is an important opportunity for students to demonstrate their learning and set themselves up for success in their final NCEA examinations.
There are no alternative dates for these exams, they follow the NCEA External Exam format and rules.
