Perhaps it was written in the wind.
The New Zealand Secondary School’s Golf Championships were during Winter Tournament, hosted by McLeans Island Golf Club at McLeans Island, Christchurch.
Qualifying second in Canterbury, the Te Kura o Waimairi-iri Burnside High School team of Junie Chang, Jono Fry and James Mordaunt stormed home to win by three shots.
Mr Warwick Taylor, the team manager, has expressed to Newstalk ZB that perhaps this was meant to be.
“With a five shot lead after the first round, a cabbage tree or ti kōuka tree in the middle of the fairway of the eighteenth hole and a trophy and medals waiting to be handled our by an individual with the last name of Burnside, perhaps this was an occasion that was just meant to be”
Listen to Mr Taylor speak to Lesley Murdoch about the remarkable performance of the team on Newstalk ZB.
Each then went on to play in the individual tournament and came home strong with Jono placing 15th, James 20th and Junie making the top five.
A huge congratulations to Junie, Jono and James – you have certainly lived our school values and sought excellence in your chosen field.
