Yesterday, four teams from Burnside High competed in the Canterbury Regional Inter Schools Chess Competition held at Hagley Park Multicultural and Community Centre.

The format was five rounds, each comprising four games of timed Chess per round. Burnside A and B competed in the A-grade, a round-robin with teams from four other schools. Burnside C and D played in the B-grade comprising 18 teams from 9 schools.

Burnside A won all five rounds, earning a maximum of 10 points out of 10 and took the title of Canterbury Regional Interschools Champions, bringing home a trophy and also qualified for the National Interschools competition to be held in Auckland in September. Of their 20 games, they won 18, drew 1, and lost 1. The singular loss was to the Burnside B team, showing the depth of talent playing Chess for the school.

Burnside B came 5th in the A-grade and were the only team to win a game against Burnside A.

Burnside C and D came second in the B grade on raw scores requiring a countback resulting in Burnside C in 4th, and Burnside D taking home 2nd place.

Congratulations to our teams on a very successful campaign. We look forward to seeing what our regional champions can offer in the national tournament in September.
