Please make sure bikes are secured with a high-quality bike lock.
Unfortunately, we have had a number of individuals external to Burnside High School tampering with bikes at our school. We do have surveillance but ask that students / families invest in a high-quality bike lock as a deterrent where possible.
We have also been made aware of a free app where bikes can be registered, regardless of their value. If a registered bike is stolen and reported via this app or website, local police and the local bike community (individuals and businesses) will be alerted, increasing the chance of return.
The app is called Project529.
How it works:
Project 529, also known as 529 Garage, is a bicycle registration and recovery platform that helps prevent bike theft and aids in the return of stolen bikes. Users register their bikes with the platform, providing details like make, model, photos, and serial number. If a bike is stolen, users can report it stolen through the app or website, initiating an alert to the 529 Garage community and law enforcement. Law enforcement can then use the platform to identify and recover stolen bikes.
