Support for every student
When students are comfortable in their school environment, and respected, trusted and valued, they are engaged and better prepared to learn.
We expect a lot of today’s high school graduates. They need to attain high levels of literacy and numeracy but today’s school leavers must also be critical thinkers, adaptable, collaborative, self-managing, and creative.
To get them there, we believe in supporting the growth of the whole person. We do this by creating a safe, inclusive environment with quality teacher / student relationships.

Our Values
Our values define how we operate at Burnside: we seek excellence, bring respect and have pride in all that our staff and students undertake.

Excellence through connection
By engaging, challenging and supporting students to raise their aspirations and develop their talents, we work with students to develop strong interpersonal skills and ensure personal excellence and care for others.
We celebrate diversity. It is our strength and a source of pride. It means that we respect, understand and celebrate the things that make us unique. By nurturing wellbeing and relationships, we create real connections with each other and support students to achieve personal excellence.
Staff work collaboratively to support and promote a sense of belonging and wellbeing in all students. We all contribute to a safe, inclusive environment where positive and supportive relationships exist among all students and their teachers.
Connecting with family
When students, teachers and family are working together, students are more engaged and successful as they find their path in life. They say it takes a village to raise a child, well here at Burnside High School we have over two thousand six hundred teenagers that need our collaborative support.
We highly encourage families to engage with school life. Parents, caregivers and whānau are able to do this directly by speaking with form teachers, deans or teaching staff but also through our Parent Portal and use of the Schoology classroom based technology.
When families are well informed about what is happening at school, we know that makes a real difference to their children’s progress. On a fortnightly basis we send out our Burnside Bulletin to keep all students, staff and families up-to-date with the latest news from Burnside High School.
Year 9 support
Parents and whānau of Year 9 students will get to know the divisional team early in their first term. As students progress through the school, parents are invited to information evenings about topics relevant to the year group. In Year 9, divisional information evenings ensure that students and their families understand our Burnside values of seeking excellence, bringing respect and having pride in all that we do. It is also an opportunity to understand how the school operates and how parents and caregivers can be involved.
Senior support
In later years, we invite families to join us at sessions to help understand NCEA and the Cambridge International Education offerings and other curriculum changes as required or for various extra-curricular trips. When students join the senior school we invite parents, caregivers and whānau back into school to understand the expectations and processes in our senior division.

Parent Portal
Parents have access to the Parent Portal, our web portal for important school information such as the school calendar, timetables, attendance records, and student progress reports.
