All Year 12 Biology students visited Lincoln University recently to hear from researchers about the fight to save our wildlife.

The visit included a stop at the Zero Invasive Predators (ZIP) compound. Here Tom Agnew spoke to students about what ZIP is doing to try to suppress and eliminate predators such as stoats, possums and rats. He showed students the latest technology used in trapping and fence design, including the use of AI assisted thermal cameras and auto-baiting systems so that re-baiting of traps isn’t required so often.

At Lincoln University, students engaged in a range of activities including exploring stoat behaviour, testing themselves against AI and finding out about careers in the environmental sciences.

Students also experienced what it would be like as a University student, listening to a lecture by Adrian Paterson. This lecture contained a lot of information students could use in the upcoming assessment for this topic.
