There has been a lot of commentary in the media about the removal of a requirement for school boards to put Te Tiriti o Waitangi into practice. Our school board sees no changes to our strategic plan.
Our school strategic plan, which sets out what we will focus on as a school for the next three years, was agreed in September and ratified by our new Board. It is explicit in our commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
Our strategy includes the following statement:
“This strategy is grounded in our commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, ensuring that the principles of partnership, protection and participation are lived out in all we do. We work in true partnership with mana whenua, whānau and communities, valuing mātauranga Māori alongside all other knowledge systems. We actively protect and promote te reo Māori, tikanga and cultural narratives, ensuring they are visible, respected and interwoven into our daily practice. In weaving together our values and Treaty commitments, we create a place where identity is honoured, relationships are deepened, and the pursuit of excellence empowers all to thrive.”
Within our strategy we also have specific strategic outcomes to show measurable progress in achieving equitable outcomes for Māori and for improving the wellbeing and belonging of all students.
The foundation of our strategy is our vision – te Moemoeā: personal excellence and care for others, our mission – tō tātou whāinga: to provide a safe, positive, inclusive learning environment where students attain the knowledge, skills and personal qualities to choose the right path in life and our values – ō tātau uara: bring respect / manaakitanga, have pride / mana and seek excellence / rangatiratanga.
The change made by the Government does not alter our commitment to working with whānau and iwi and Te Tiriti continues to guide our strategic direction.
