A number of our young social science students got to travel to Wellington this week to explore our nations history.
Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne Wildlife Sanctuary was a hit on day one with the birds putting on incredible displays, the tuatara out in numbers and some students are now expert bird-identifiers based on the bird song!
At Te Papa the Gallipoli exhibition was stunning and enthralled the students and teachers alike. Students were also able to freely roam Te Papa and enjoyed the huge selection of history on display.
Next up, a tour of Parliament, which was exceptional – an hour and a half of intrigue and information, concluding with two students, Didi and Willa, standing at the media podium and taking questions from the ‘media’ (our students). It was an awesome experience for everyone and included speaking to two former Burnside High School students who are parliamentary staff.
The National Library was an excellent stop and the tour historical narrative and key documents were both entertaining and interesting for everyone.
Wellington is well worth this historical visit, so if you haven’t recently, perhaps it should be on your visit list. We hope to run this trip for our students again in the future.
