Canterbury Regional Senior Debating Competition

March 18, 2024

BHS debating champions!

Burnside Cabbages: Sam Allan, Thomas Brocherie, Katie Horton

Burnside Aurora: Akhila Sharma, Andrew Wu (Yr 11), Andrew Wu (Yr 12).

Both teams brilliantly represented Burnside showcasing their talents and abilities (while also doing homework in some of their free time!).

Burnside Aurora won three out of five of their debates which found them tied with six other teams all vying for the 4th place in the semi-final.

An amazing feat considering this was their first Senior Regionals Competition and that Andrew Wu (Yr 11) has only joined the team this year.

Burnside Cabbages were the reigning campions of the whole competition, winning every single one of their debates; including a tough and very close semi-final against Rangi Ruru Girls’ School and a somewhat messy but still close final against St Bedes College!

While we have often got into the semis and finals over the years, this team was able to break the curse and is the first Burnside High School team has won this competition since 2013.

Thomas received a highly commended speaker certificate. Sam won the Best Speaker of the competition and a place in the Canterbury Regional Team which will compete in the National Debating Competition in May this year. Again this is the first time since Daniel Coats in 2013 and 2014, respectively, that a student from Burnside has received these honours.

Congratulations to everyone who took part!
